“Jazz is not background music. You must concentrate upon it in order to get the most of it. You must absorb most of it. The harmonies within the music can relax, soothe, relax, and uplift the mind when you concentrate upon and absorb it. Jazz music stimulates the minds and uplifts the souls of those who play it was well as of those who listen to immerse themselves in it. As the mind is stimulated and the soul uplifted, this is eventually reflected in the body.” - Horace Silver

John Pizzarelli
The Ottawa International Jazz Festival runs from June 22nd through July 2nd (Complete performance schedule follows). Now in its 26th year, the TD Canada Trust Ottawa International Jazz the Festival opens its Main stage with the Concert under the Stars Series featuring John Pizzarelli, known as one of the most accomplished interpreters of the Great American Songbook and his brilliant guitar work and smooth vocals. This superstar and son of jazz great Bucky Pizzarelli, will be joined by The Nat Raider Orchestra to open the 26th celebrations on June 22 in Confederation Park.

Next up on June 23rd, to start the night off at 8:30 pm, they welcome back accomplished legend Mavis Staples who possesses one of the most recognizable and treasured voices in contemporary music. Also later that night at 9:30 pm, they have a special treat as they welcome The Blind Boys of Alabama who have dazzled audiences with their spirit and energy of pure soul gospel music for over 60 years.

The remaining Concert Under the Stars Series line-up reads like a who's who of jazz artists, including Hilton Ruiz, the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the inspiring McCoy Tyner Septet, multi-talented vibraphonist Stefon Harris, funk master Maceo Parker, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, recent Juno award winners Bedouin Soundclash, and last but certainly not least, the explosive rising star Jamie Cullum, a Grammy award nominee who continues to redefine where the parameters of pop, and jazz - indeed, all musical genres - are drawn. Performing with Jamie is up and coming Sonya Kitchell.

Dr John
The U.S. Bank Saint Louis Jazz Festival will be held on Friday, June 23 & Saturday, June 24 2006 in Clayton's Shaw Park, St. Louis County, Missouri. Performers this year include: Dr. John, David Sanborn, Preservation Hall Band, Readus Miller Project, The Clarke/Duke Project, Denise Thimes, LaMar Harris, The Craig Russo Latin Jazz Project, Rick Haydon & The SIUE Jazz Ensemble, Anita Rosamond, New World, Harmonica Jazz, and Lizz Wright.

About the Artists:

Dr. John proudly stands along side of Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino as one of New Orleans' all-time distinctive voices. Not only is the Good Doctor's dry, gravel cackle one of the most infectious sounds in both jazz and popular music, but he is universally celebrated as the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to the Crescent City. Both his unique musical approach and his striking physical appearance encompasses local African, American-Indian and Creole influences mixed in with quite a few equally exotic tributaries besides. He's both the essence of the city's colorful past and its ever evolving future and, beyond. www.drjohn.org

It'll all be happening at the 27th Festival International de Jazz de Montréal-presented by General Motors of Canada, chief sponsor and official presenter of the event set to take place from June 28th to July 9th, 2006.  Over 140 ticketed indoor concerts thematically divided into a total of 15 series are scheduled in a variety of downtown venues, from the classiest to the funkiest.

This year, there's an unusual number of luminaries on the roster, names like Paul Simon, B.B. King, Tony Bennett and McCoy Tyner, plus Brad Mehldau, who's this year's recipient of the Prix Miles-Davis.  Etta James will be awarded  the Prix Ella Fitzgerald and Salif Keita will receive the 2006 Prix Antonio Carlos Jobim. John Pizzarelli will be opening the event and Dave Brubeck will be closing it. John Zorn, Nils Petter Molvaer, Ravi Coltrane, Yusef Lateef and many other exponents of everything cool and eclectic will be blowing into town, too, keeping up the momentum as the Festival rolls into its second quarter-century.
