Kenny Garrett © Andrea Canter The schedule might seem pared back a bit this year but the quality of the music will more than compensate when the Twin Cities Jazz Festival kicks of at Mears Park in downtown St. Paul on Friday evening, June 22. With local and national acts spread over Friday evening and much of Saturday, the Summit Brewery Stage will cover much of the wide spectrum of modern jazz. The name of the festival may no longer be “Hot”—but the music will sizzle. And all Mears Park events are free! Friday, June 22 6:30 pm, Irv Williams Quartet. What better opening act than Minnesota’s own Mr. Smooth? At 87 (nearing 88!), Irv is one of the living treasures of local music. Raised in Cincinnati and Little Rock, Williams first performed in the Twin Cities as a clarinet and sax player with the Navy during Word War II. Turning down invitations to play with Count Basie and Duke Ellington, he stayed in the Twin Cities, although his vita includes stints with Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, and Billy Eckstein. Here at home, Irv has played at every jazz venue, past and present, including the old Flame Bar where he was often back to back with such stars as Sarah Vaughn, Dizzy Gillespie, and Johnny Hodges. Retire? No chance, as Irv has demonstrated with three new CDs in the past three years! Joining Irv will be very special guest, pianist Jon Weber, who has become the “house” pianist for the festival over the past five years. Also on the bandstand, local legends Gordy Johnson on bass and Kenny Horst on drums. Let the music begin! |

Matt Wilson © Andrea Canter The 12th Annual Litchfield Jazz Festival will be held on August 3, 4, 5 at the Goshen Fairground in Northwest Connecticut. This year’s line-up is a salute to jazz orchestras featuring the Mingus Big Band, Count Basie Orchestra with Nnenna Freelon, Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra featuring Carla Bley and much more. With past performers like Dave Brubeck, Eartha Kitt, Dionne Warwick and Diana Krall, it’s no wonder the Litchfield Jazz Festival was recently nominated for two Festie Awards by MelodyTrip.com. A long-time festival attendee called it “a most mellow and tasty event,” and Dave Hershorin of New Orleans Radio said, “Litchfield really is what other jazz festivals wish they could be…a true gem.” The weekend kicks off on Friday, August 3, with a gala “Friends of the Festival” party, with music provided by outstanding students of Litchfield Jazz Camp and hors d'oeuvres by Jordan Caterers. The party is followed by a performance by two-time Grammy Award Winner and NEA Jazz Master, trombonist Slide Hampton. Up next is the Count Basie Orchestra featuring Six-time Grammy Award nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon. |

Norman Brown and Peabo Bryson © Joe Montague Smooth jazz guitarist Norman Brown opened the act billed as Summer Storm at the 32nd annual The Harrah’s Rincon Smooth Jazz 98.1 Gaslamp Festival in San Diego, The one day festival held on May 26, featured numerous musicians and singers performing on two stages located in the city’s downtown core from mid afternoon until late evening. Brown was joined periodically on stage by keyboardist Jeff Lorber, soprano saxophonist Marion Meadows and singer Peabo Bryson. Backed by a solid quintet consisting of a drummer, percussionist, rhythm guitar and bass player, Brown’s chords sizzled and his scatting was flawless and effortless. Often it was difficult to tell where his scatting which often transcended into more of a vocalese, ended and his guitar began. After a couple of songs, Brown introduced Lorber to the audience. Seated behind an electric keyboard Lorber to the delight of the thousands who crowded the streets, pushing towards the front of the stage, moved into the title track from his current CD He Had A Hat. |

Roy Hargrove © Ian Gittler Tucked into the vineyards and rolling hills of Sonoma County, the 9th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival offers an all-star lineup over ten days, and features some of the biggest names in modern jazz. Since its inception under the direction of Jessica Felix, the Healdsburg festival has become one of the jazz nation’s best kept secrets, a mecca for talent unrivaled by the big name festivals yet sequestered in a laid-back, easy-going setting for those seeking refuge from urban chaos. Just two hours north of San Francisco but eons from city congestion, Healdsburg is home to artists, wineries and gourmet dining, as well as to a series of jazz education programs throughout the year, culminating in the June festival. Headliners this year include Patricia Barber (June 2), Delfeayo Marsalis’ New Orleans Quintet (June 3), the Jim Hall/Dave Holland Duo (June 9), the George Cables Project (June 10), and Roy Hargrove with Roberta Gambarini (June 10). Events, some ticketed and some free, are held throughout Healdsburg and surrounding Sonoma wine country: |
