 Bob Dorough The New Jersey Jazz Society Presents the Sanofi-Aventis JazzFest 2007 on June 9 – 10 at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey New Jersey’s oldest jazz festival will feature more than 60 artists and will be held on the campus of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey on Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10. Jazzfest 2007 celebrates the past, present and future of jazz with some of today’s greatest musicians. Presenting a weekend of nonstop music, Jazzfest has become one of the region’s most popular summer festivals over the past three decades.
The music begins at noon each day and runs nonstop in three venues until 6:00 pm. On Saturday, June 9, the featured artists will include: Winard Harper Sextet, Earl May Quintet featuring Houston Person, Hendrik Meurkens Jazz Samba Quintet, Midiri Brothers Band, Sarah Partridge Trio, and the Bob Dorough Trio. On Sunday, June 10 the featured artists will be: Ken Peplowski Quintet, Dick Meldonian Big Band, Five Play, featuring musicians from Diva, Nilson Matta’s Brazilian Voyage Band featuring Harry Allen, the Jay Leonhart Trio, and the Nancy Nelson Trio. This year’s festival will once again kick off with a free concert on June 2nd.

 Louie Bellson Referred to by jazz critic Leonard Feather as "one of the most phenomenal drummers in history," Louie Bellson has expressed himself on drums since age three. At 15, he pioneered the double bass drum set-up. At 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa drumming contest. Louie has performed on more than 200 albums, with such greats as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Woody Herman, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, James Brown, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Joe Williams, Wayne Newton, and Bellson's late wife, Pearl Bailey. "His ability to cover the whole musical spectrum, from an elite percussionist to a very gifted composer and arranger, never ceases to amaze me. Celebrating the spirit of the “First Lady of Jazz Piano,” the 12th annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival will showcase some of the finest jazz artists on the planet, May 10-12 at Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Williams, who composed for Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, performed with sax legends Ben Webster and Lester Young, and mentored such luminaries as Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, has been a source of inspiration to several generations of young women seeking careers in jazz as performers, composers, arrangers, and educators. Notes Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, Dr. Billy Taylor, “From May 10–12, I invite you to open your minds, ears, and hearts to three days of remarkable music by more of the greatest musicians playing jazz today. In 1957, the Newport Jazz Festival presented several of the greatest jazz divas on successive nights, with the tape recorders rolling the whole time. Shortly thereafter came the original LP, Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday at Newport. And, when the Count Basie band walked onto the stage at Newport that same year, the very air was saturated with electricity. The nearly 8,000 fans in the audience could feel it, too-a sense of history in the making. Basie's set also went on record as the most exciting and hard-swinging performance of one extraordinary night.
Now, 50 years later, Festival Producer George Wein and Artistic Director Dan Melnick rekindle and celebrate that history by presenting the present day Basie Orchestra, led by long-time trombonist and Basie alum, Bill Hughes and two of the 21st Century's best jazz vocalists, Dianne Reeves and Nnenna Freelon. "One night this past fall, I was home listening to a reissue of one of the great 1957 recordings at Newport and then remembered there was an extensive collection of material recorded that year. It occurred to me that we should acknowledge the fiftieth anniversary of some of those sets at this year's festival," stated Melnick. |
