Coming to the AQ
|
Thursday, December 4, McNally Smith Jazz Ensemble (6:30 pm), Triplicate (9 pm, $5) |
|
Triplicate is Joel Shapira on electric guitars, Bruce "Pooch" Heine on acoustic and electric basses and David Stanoch on trapset. Triplicate is an improvisational jazz trio, formed in 1996, that blends an eclectic variety of musical influences and experiences together to produce a personal repertoire of music defined by their collective group sound. Triplicate became a band more by accident than design. The trio bonded through informal jam sessions and a desire to stretch, burn, and play melodically. As the trio discovered its musical chemistry a repertoire quickly began to form and the group forged ahead with a concept that they would perform as a true band in every sense--developing their original and adapted music together and always performing as a core unit. This is a concept seen less often, in this day and age, to which the members of Triplicate have dedicated themselves for almost a decade. |

Friday, Deccember 5, Dave Karr Quarter (9 pm, $10) |
For over 50 years, saxophonist/flutist/clarinetist/composer Dave Karr has been performing with many of the best national and Twin Cities jazz artists. The NYC native grew up seeing the great jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and he got the bug. Karr moved to the Twin Cities in his twenties, and has long established himself as one of the best-loved characters in the jazz scene. Whether he’s in the orchestra of a touring Broadway hit, providing flourishes to the shows of top Twin Cities singers, leading his Gerry Mulligan tribute band on baritone sax or fronting his own quartet, Karr is a standout. “[Dave's] fluid style is both exciting and elegant,” JazzPolice.com. Check out this video of Dave performing "Zoot Walks In", or this one of Dave playing "Oleo" at the AQ. Everybody, I mean everbody, digs Dave. |

Saturday, December 6, Larry Coryell Trio (8:00 pm & 10:30 pm, $25) |
Larry Coryell, one of the most influential guitarists in jazz and jazz/rock fusion, is making his Artists' Quarter debut. Coryell will be joined by drumming great Alphonse Mouzon (of Weather Report, McCoy Tyner, Coryell’s The Eleventh House and other fame) and Joe Bagg on B-3 organ. Reservations are recommended. Click here to purchase tickets. Larry Coryell has recorded more than 75 albums over the past 40 years as a bandleader, soloist and 'featured accompanist'. Hailed by his legion of fans as one of "the guitar gods" in the late 1970s and as a "truly Renaissance musician who excels at all styles of playing", he has also been christened as "a true pioneer of rock-jazz fusion" by the New York Times, and dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Dan Ouellette of DownBeat magazine. When he hit the New York jazz scene in the mid-1960s, Coryell brought a jazz style infused with blues and rock that changed the way people thought about jazz guitar. A definitively complete player, he went on to do brilliant work in bebop, acoustic and classical music as well. As a bandleader he has released several classic records. His membership in cutting edge groups, including The Eleventh House (also featuring Randy Brecker), has also been deeply influential. The musicians with whom Coryell has recorded forms a staggering list that includes Herbie Mann, John McLaughlin, Stephane Grappelli, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus and many more.
